Our Facility

Several years ago Gordonsdale's owner, Sandy Johnston, upon walking over the acreage of his several hundred acre farm, envisioned how perfect the gently rolling grassy slopes and fields would be to host a professionally designed eventing cross country schooling course. To fulfill his dream he enlisted the aid of one of the top US eventers, Nina Fout, to create the course - one that has now become the premier cross country schooling course in Northern Virginia and the surrounding states. Johnston's "hands-on" approach in personally overseeing that the course is maintained continuously, the fences kept in top shape with all landings and takeoffs graveled and secure in all weather conditions, and that the gallops are mowed and groomed to perfection, has helped make Gordonsdale's reputation one of the finest on the east coast.
Nina Fout of The Plains, VA, has been eventing nationally and internationally since 1972, successfully competing such 3 and 4 star CCI events as Burghley, Blenheim, and Badminton in England, Rolex (KY), Fair Hill (MD), and Punchestown (IR). In 1979 she was named National Junior Champion, and in 1986 her horse "Elsaik" was named HOTY (Horse of the Year) and she was awarded Horse/Rider of the Year Advanced Level. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Fout won a team Bronze Medal aboard her brilliant eventer "Three Magic Beans".

Fout's cross country course at Gordonsdale offers a flowing, forward design of over 40 fences for all levels from Novice to Preliminary. The fences are sited to take full advantage of the beautifully rolling terrain and lovely galloping fields. All are built to the highest specifications with approaches and landings graveled to give the maximum purchase in all weather conditions. A warm up area of inviting log fences in a gallop lane offers the rider and horse an excellent starting point before advancing onto the course. Gordonsdale also has a cross country gallop track, and a stadium jumping area.

Peter Green, who designed the water complex at Gordonsdale, was Chairman of the USEF Eventing Selection Committee for many of the fifteen+ years he served on that board. An accomplished eventer, Green took the individual 8th in the World Championships in Loelheim (Germany) and competed at Burghley, Blenheim, Badminton, and Boekolo, as well as the Rolex Three-Day Events from 1979 to 2004.

Green took a personal, hands-on interest in designing and building an inviting, professional water complex at Gordonsdale. His attention to detail to provide a variety of approaches and levels of difficulty - from Novice to Preliminary - for the aptly named "Peter's Pond" has been met with great enthusiasm by the local eventers and combined driving whips alike. It is the most popular...and enjoyable... schooling fence here at Gordonsdale.
